Dans une interw, Sir Alex avait été attaqué en disant qu'il faisait rejouer ses joueurs blessés trop tôt

 

Concernant les blessés actuels, je n'ai pas franchement l'impression que ce soit plus le cas, car il a l'air de ne pas précipiter les choses pour lui ni pour certains autres joueurs de notre équipe.

He is arguably the most important member of the England squad although he hasn't kicked a ball for his country since May 2008.

 

And while Manchester United fans are understandably cautious about the news emerging from Old Trafford about Owen Hargreaves , the midfielder could prove the key to unlocking Fabio Capello's biggest England dilemma.

 

Sir Alex Ferguson's suggestion that the injury-plagued Hargreaves could be in the squad for this month's Champions League trip to AC Milan would be a huge lift for the Three Lions as much as the Red Devils.

 

Hargreaves is a top-class player, as he demonstrated, beyond any reasonable doubt, in the 2006 World Cup quarter-final against Portugal, where it was the Canadian-born star, and not Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo, or the red-carded Wayne Rooney, who ran the show.

 

England's qualifying record suggests they did not miss Hargreaves unduly in a campaign which saw Gareth Barry take advantage of his absence to rise to the foreground of Capello's team planning.

 

But Capello would have loved to have had the option to utilise Hargreaves in any of the very different roles at which the versatile players has proved he excels: holding midfielder, driving through the centre or down the flank, and left or right and even full-back with far more defensive acumen than Glen Johnson.

 

Look at the 2008 Champion League Final in Moscow, where Hargreaves shut down Ashley Cole and Chelsea's left-sided thrust, doing a phenomenal shift on the right of the United midfield.

 

In tight World Cup games, where discipline is key, Hargreaves would provide Capello with a big and versatile option.

 

And, perhaps more importantly in light of the continuing furore over John Terry, a fit Hargreaves might give the Italian wriggle room to make keeping the Chelsea man as the fulcrum of his squad far easier.

 

While Capello will decide after talks on Friday whether to keep Terry as his captain, the scale of the Chelsea centre-half's rift with former best mate Wayne Bridge is a monumental one.

 

That is the crux of the problem, with Bridge justifiably reluctant to consider spending six week in the same Rustenburg hotel as the man he feels has betrayed and cuckolded him.

 

In truth, of course, Bridge would only be going to South Africa as a travelling reserve to former club-mate Cole, who will play every minute of every game if he is fit.

 

Additionally, Bridge might arguably find himself chosen by default, if at all.

 

Capello had been keen to promote Arsenal's Kieran Gibbs - out for the season after suffering the curse of the metatarsal - after watching Bridge's Manchester City performances with increasing concerns, and could still opt for Aston Villa's Stephen Warnock or Leighton Baines of Everton.

 

But when you have only 20 outfield players to choose, and do not want to waste too many selections on players who you would only use in the deepest of adversity, then having multi-faceted alternatives has a vast appeal.

 

Hargreaves, and Aston Villa's rightly in favour James Milner, represent two players who can make things a great deal easier for Capello.

 

Received wisdom is that the squad must be balanced, two players for each position, with eight defenders, eight midfielders and four strikers.

 

But Sven Goran Eriksson's decision to take a quartet of Rooney (injured), Michael Owen (injured), Theo Walcott (too callow to ever kick a ball) and Peter Crouch to Germany in 2006, ignoring the claims of a fit and firing Jermain Defoe was evidence that conventional thinking can be flawed.

 

Capello would need to take four centre-halves, especially with the fitness doubts surrounding Rio Ferdinand, while Johnson and Cole are the first-choice full-backs.

 

But if Hargreaves is available to travel as a midfielder - probably bad news for club-mate Michael Carrick - then he could be the deputy for Johnson's role - or even on the other side - while Milner, too, could play in either full-back position.

 

That would free Capello to add a fifth striker to the likely quartet of Rooney, Crouch, Defoe and Emile Heskey - either Gabriel Agbonlahor or Walcott, who is probably now behind both Aaron Lennon and racing certainty David Beckham on the right.

 

No need for Bridge would end the question of how he could live in close proximity to Terry.

 

Capello is, above all, a pragmatist. Hargreaves can give him the reason he needs to make the decision that is best for England.

En gros il dit que Hargo s'entraine depuis donc plsueirus semaines, et que d'apres lui il est en mesure de jouer, mais que d'abord il doit retouver sa confiance. Bref en tout cas Fergis le soutien comme pas possible.

Sir Alex Ferguson has challenged Owen Hargreaves to prove his fitness and land a place on the flight to Milan in 12 days' time.

 

Hargreaves is back in training at Carrington following surgery on both knees in December 2008 and January 2009.

 

He is alternating between working with the first team and the reserves and Ferguson has told him he will take him to Italy for the Champions League showdown with AC Milan on February 16 if he complete a full week's training.

 

Ferguson's words are massive encouragement for the injury-plagued England midfielder, who has not played since September 2008.

 

The United boss said: "I would like to seem him make the squad for the Champions League fixtures against AC Milan, but we won't rush him.

 

"We are being patient with the rehabilitation following his knee operations and he is alternating his training with the reserve and first-team squads, working for two days and then resting a day.

 

"It's a matter of him regaining his confidence and, when he is able to train every day, that will be the moment for him to return to match play."

Avoir Hargo dans l'équipe est toujours un plus, un gros plus même quand il est au top de sa forme, par contre je trouve vraiment dommage que ce soit souvent Carrick qui fasse les frais de la titularisation d'Hargo, surtout quand on voit le niveau qu'il peut avior (cf. Arsenul)...

Lors de sa premiere saison chez nous, Owen à souvent relégué Carrick au banc des remplaçant pour les matchs importants...

Fabio Capello’s hopes of having Owen Hargreaves fit for the World Cup finals have suffered another huge blow after Sir Alex Ferguson removed the Manchester United midfield player from his Champions League squad.

 

Ferguson’s decision raises fresh doubts about the player’s chances of returning to action this season. Hargreaves has been sidelined for the past 16½ months after having operations on both knees to cure chronic tendinitis that has restricted him to 25 starts for United since his projected £20.2 million move from Bayern Munich in July 2007.

 

Ferguson, the United manager, claimed last week that he hoped to have Hargreaves available for the first leg of his team’s Champions League round-of-16 tie away to AC Milan on Tuesday week.

 

But the decision to replace him with Ritchie de Laet, a 21-year-old full back who has made only four starts, in the revised 25-man squad submitted to Uefa this week for the Champions League knockout phase is a worrying turn of events for United and England.

 

Ferguson included Hargreaves in his original 25 for the Champions League group stage in the belief that the player would be back at the start of November, but although Hargreaves had always had last month in mind as a more realistic return date, his failure to make even a reserve-team appearance by now is a cause for concern.

 

As the only world-class midfield anchorman available to Capello, Hargreaves would bring an added dimension to England’s midfield and give the Italian more options, but the chances of him being ready for South Africa appear to be fading fast.

 

Ferguson suggested last week that Hargreaves was suffering from a crisis of confidence after so long out. “Owen is alternating his training with the reserve and first-team squads, working for two days and then resting a day,” Ferguson wrote in his programme notes to preview the second leg of United’s Carling Cup semi-final against Manchester City at Old Trafford eight days ago. “It’s a matter of him regaining his confidence and when he is able to train every day, that will be the moment for him to return to match play.”

 

Hargreaves is contracted to United until June next year, but if he fails to prove his fitness this season, Ferguson may be forced into the transfer market for a defensive midfield player in the summer, a situation the manager hopes to avoid, given that the majority of his transfer budget is likely to be earmarked for at least one more striker, a creative midfield player and another defender, should Nemanja Vidic leave.

 

Hargreaves’s most recent appearance came in the 1-1 Barclays Premier League draw away to Chelsea in September 2008, since when Dr Richard Steadman, the world renowned knee surgeon, performed two operations and oversaw the player’s rehabilitation in the United States.

 

Rio Ferdinand’s appeal hearing over the increased ban he received for violent conduct is unlikely to take place before United’s league match away to Aston Villa on Wednesday. The defender was banned for three games for an incident involving Craig Fagan, the Hull City striker, during United’s 4-0 win last month and given an additional one-match suspension after an FA independent regulatory commission ruled that his decision to contest the charge was “frivolous”.

 

Ryan Giggs, the United midfield player, has said that Wayne Rooney is “getting nearer that group” of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Kaká, the players widely acknowledged to be the best in the world.

Bon après c'est que les dires d'un type du Times.... Tout ce qu'il y d'officiel c'est que Hargo a été enlevé de la liste. Faudra voir ce que Sir Alex dira à ce sujet. (Il sera surement interrogé rapidement)

Il sera pas au top pour jouer la ligue des champions... Il doit d'abord jouer quelques matchs avec la réserve avant d'intégrer l'équipe première. Dans un premier temps comme remplaçant puis aligner les matchs afin de retrouver son niveau. Il manque de rythme voir de physique pour la ligue des champions. Deux ans de blessure ce n'est pas rien. Le but est qu'il retrouve les terrains cette saison, de plus en plus réguliérement afin d'être au mieux pour la saison prochaine.

Bon, la il faut plus s'attendre à un retour de Owen H.

La saison n'aura jamais commencer pour lui, et je le vois absolument pas rentré même comme remplacent avant la fin..

Owen Hargreaves a pour l’instant une seule stat intéressante chez les Red Devils : 25 matches de Premier League depuis août 2007 pour 25 millions d’euros, soit 1 million d’euros le match.

 

C’est quand même cher payé pour un Anglais à rouflaquettes, né Canadien, qui a explosé au Bayern.

 

Blessé et opéré des deux genoux en octobre 2008, on n’a toujours pas vu la trogne d’Hargreaves sur les terrains de Premier League. Et ce n’est sans doute pas pour tout de suite.

 

« Nous attendons qu’il soit en pleine confiance pour le faire jouer. Il sera probablement sur ma liste pour la Ligue des Champions. À moins d’un imprévu, il en fera partie », signé Ferguson dans le Daily Telegraph du 22 janvier.

 

Manque de pot, l’imprévu a dû arriver puisque Sir Alex a décidé de ne pas l’inscrire sur la liste du squad mancunien pour la Ligue des Champions.

 

Par ricochet, le nom d’Hargreaves sur la prochaine liste de Capello pour le mondial sud-africain s’écrit de plus en plus en pointillé.

 

Difficile retour au royaume pour Owen...
