Opinion: Herrera needs game to avoid being Man Utd's next Kagawa

The Spaniard featured from the bench against Burnley on Wednesday but still has work to do to make an im

Old Trafford erupted on Wednesday night when the number 21 went up on the electronic subs board and Ander Herrera entered the arena against Burnley.

Earlier the Stretford End and those in the South Stand near the tunnel had burst into applause when the Basque player warmed up in the first half.

It is doubtful his 39th minute introduction had been planned so early but Daley Blind’s cut above his left eye forced manager Louis van Gaal’s arm.

Cynics might suggest that Blind’s KO was the only way £29m Herrera was going to get a decent amount of Premier League minutes under his belt.

The midfielder has not started a league match since the home game against Stoke City on December 2.

Herrera started and scored against Yeovil in the FA Cup third round but other than that he has been limited to seven appearances from the bench.

The 25-year-old’s sub appearances since the December match against Stoke do not add up to even two full matches in total.

pact at Old Trafford.

The problem with that is that because United have generally been disappointing in the same period means that Herrera has now been set up as the Reds saviour.

His ovation against Burnley said it all.

But Herrera is in danger of becoming the new Shinji Kagawa and that’s dangerous.

Kagawa was Sir Alex Ferguson’s buy who actually became a world class talent in many people’s eyes during the David Moyes era without actually playing!

In the end he was the midfielder who had the remedy for all United’s problems. He’d effectively been put on a pedestal by virtue of not being involved in a poor run. But he could not really live up to the hype.

It is almost two years since Kagawa scored a clinical hat-trick against Norwich City at Old Trafford in a 4-0 rout and – after a debut season that had been hampered by a knee injury – it was the kind of display Fergie had promised when he was signed for £24m from Borussia Dortmund.

Ferguson had also promised the Far East superstar would be much better in his second season. But the Norwich treble was a rare major highlight and when Fergie retired and Moyes was installed Kagawa’s fate seemed sealed.

The incoming Scot didn’t seem enamoured with him in the same way his predecessor had been.

His stock rose among the fans who demanded his inclusion as the player who would turn the tide but Kagawa couldn’t answer the call.

It has worrying echoes for Herrera. He was essentially a Moyes buy as most of the groundwork for the deal had been done with Athletic Bilbao the summer previous.

That proposed 2013 deal had collapsed but was put on the back burner. United revisited it when Van Gaal was appointed and the Dutchman did give his approval for the transfer.

But despite his box-to-box energy and eye for a goal – three in seven starts – Van Gaal has been reluctant to use him. In the meantime he has become another world beater and the player to answer United’s SOS.

Herrera doesn’t need that albatross around his neck. He needs a run of games to prove whether he can be the real deal.
