Neville: Ronaldo should stay
Gary Neville insists Cristiano Ronaldo is at the right club and has questioned the validity of quotes attributed to the Portuguese star saying that he is interested in a move to Real Madrid.
Neville was speaking as a pundit for ITV Sport as Ronaldo helped Portugal kick off their Euro 2008 campaign with a 2-0 win over Turkey. Goals from defender Pepe and midfielder Raul Meireles gave Luiz Felipe Scolari's men victory.
United captain Neville follows Reds legend Bryan Robson in questioning why Ronaldo would want to leave Old Trafford after such widespread personal and collective success at United in 2007/08.
"He knows he's at the right club," said Neville. "The adulation he receives, everything he would want is there. The manager's made his position clear, so I don't see a problem with that."
Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson and chief executive David Gill have made the club's stance clear by stating that Ronaldo is not for sale. But speculation surrounding his future was last week fuelled by claims from Brazilian website Terra that the Portuguese star wants a move to Madrid.
"These things always happen when players are away on international duty and are from obscure sources," he added. "He's focused completely on doing well for Portugal. Anything he does say will be taken out of context, so he can't win."
